Westwood firefighters receive $37G in FEMA grants

— Westwood Volunteer Fire Company will soon be able to equip its firefighters with 12 new sets of turnout gear and a thermal imaging camera, thanks to $37,050 in grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Westwood had not received any FEMA funds since 2003.

“Getting the FEMA grants is a huge step for us this year,” Westwood fire Chief Dan Morris said.

The department needed to put up only 5 percent in matching funds in order to get the money through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

“It’s a great program put forth by the legislature,” Morris said. “I hope that it’s something that continues in the future.”

The turnout gear will protect firefighters’ bodies when battling blazes. The camera will help find hot spots in buildings.

“This money will help provide Cambria County’s firefighters with the resources they need to ensure their safety and the safety of those they serve,” U.S. Sen. Bob Casey said in a press release announcing the award.
