Update: Alleged shooter testifies in Cambria murder trial

JOHNSTOWN — The defendant accused of shooting and killing J-Quan Lewis at the Oakhurst Homes in October 2011 testified here today that he had pulled his gun and started shooting when Lewis made an aggressive move.

Marquis “G” Neal, who is observing his 31st birthday today, said that he had been at Oakhurst Homes that morning drinking vodka and popping pain killers when he had gone out looking for some “weed” – marijuana to smoke.

When he couldn’t find any marijuana, Neal said he was headed back to a friend’s apartment when he spotted Lewis approaching with another man. Neal said he paused momentarily, not wanting any trouble from the night before when Lewis and Neal’s cousin, Anthony Harvey, had had a fight outside Edder’s Den.

The defendant said that he put out his hand to shake Lewis’ hand, saying he hoped everything was “cool,” but Lewis just started to walk past him and bumped into him.

Lewis then pushed his hands into the pockets of his hoodie, Neal said.

The defendant, unsure of what Lewis was going to do, said he pulled out his gun and started shooting.

The defendant was to be cross-examined by prosecutors in a session this afternoon.

The co-defendant, Harvey, has not indicated whether he will take the stand.
