CALIFORNIA —
A state-owned university in southwestern Pennsylvania plans to lay off 11 of its 116 nonunion management employees so save money in the face of looming budget cuts proposed by Gov. Tom Corbett.
The managers to lose their jobs at California University of Pennsylvania have not been notified. California is part of the State System of Higher Education where spokesman Kenn Marshall says it’s too early to say how many other state-owned schools might consider similar layoffs.
University spokeswoman Christine Kindl says the school about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh has 967 employees, including 814 who work full-time.
The current state budget cut higher education funding by 18 percent and Corbett’s proposal for the 2012-2013 budget proposes cutting another 20 percent.
