5 things to know for today in Pennsylvania news

PHILADELPHIA — Your daily look at late-breaking news, upcoming events and stories that will be talked about in Pennsylvania on Monday:

1. FACULTY UNION HOLDING STRIKE AUTHORIZATION VOTES AT 14 STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES

The votes don’t mean the professors will strike, but if the strike authorization passes that would give the union the option to hit the picket lines if a new contract isn’t reached soon with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

2. PHILADELPHIA LOSES QUARTERBACK MICHAEL VICK TO CONCUSSION AS EAGLES LOSE FIVE STRAIGHT FOR FIRST TIME UNDER ANDY REID

Sunday’s 38-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys make is increasingly likely that Reid won’t be back to coach the Eagles for a 15th season.

3. SUSPECTS SHOT IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS INVOLVING POLICE IN PHILDELPHIA, PITTSBUGH

Philadelphia police say they fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at officers just after midnight. In Pittsburgh, police say the driver of a car who dragged an officer about 100 yards had surgery after he was shot several times late Sunday.

4. LIGHT-RAIL TRAINS RUNNING AGAIN IN PITTSBURGH AFTER DERAILMENT THAT INJURED THREE PASSENGERS

Service to much of downtown wasn’t available over the weekend after the incident Friday night. But trains are running normally to all downtown stops and the North Shore today. The Port Authority of Allegheny County says fans will be able to take trains to Heinz Field for the Monday Night Football game between Kansas City and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

5. WORKERS AT HOSTESS PLANT IN PHILADELPHIA HONORING PICKET LINE BY UNION EMPLOYEES AT BANKRUPT BAKERY’S OTHER U.S. PLANTS

About 330 workers at the Philadelphia plant they oppose a contract that would cut wages and benefits 27 to 32 percent.
