Arthur Schirmer is on trial in Monroe County on charges he killed his second wife in 2008, then tried to cover up the alleged bludgeoning by staging a car crash. Schirmer denies harming that woman or his first wife who died of similar injuries in 1999, which he claims resulted from falling down steps. The 64-year-old clergyman has yet to stand trial in that woman’s death.

The Democrat has twice been elected as an opponent of stricter gun control, but says the Connecticut elementary school shooting last month changed his mind about passing at least some stricter gun laws.
