ANOTHER DEFENDANT FACING POSSIBLE DEATH PENALTY IN TORTURE-MURDER OF MENTALLY DISABLED WOMAN

Opening statements are set today in the trial of 26-year-old Ricky Smyrnes, the third person to stand trial in the February 2010 death of Jennifer Daugherty in a dingy Greensburg apartment. Another man is already on death row in the case and a woman who was just 17 when she participated in the killings is serving a life term. Three others are awaiting trial.

FORMER LAW CLERK'S CROSS-EXAMINATION TO CONTINUE AT CORRUPTION TRIAL OF STATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE JOAN ORIE MELVIN

Lisa Sasinoski testified last week that she was ashamed of the campaign work she claims she did illegally at Melvin's urging. She's the first former Melvin staffer to testify against the justice.

FEDERAL JURY TO RETURN — YET AGAIN — AS DELIBERATIONS DRAG ON IN PHILADELHIA MOB TRIAL

The jury met for six hours Sunday, but failed to reach a verdict in the case against reputed mob boss Joseph Ligambi and six others. The day before, the panel told U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno that it was at "an impasse." But he urged them to keep trying when deliberations resume today.

STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES REACH 'FRAMEWORK' OF NEW CONTRACT WITH PROFESSORS' UNION

Negotiators for Pennsylvania's state-owned university system and the union representing about 5,500 faculty members say they reached the deal early Sunday, after two full days of negotiating. The deal must still be ratified by both sides.
