JOHNSTOWN —
The girlfriend of a Johnstown man who is in jail with two bullet wounds has been charged with helping him escape from authorities.
Richland Township police charged Erica Eillen Emmel, 21, of South Fork, with hindering apprehension, retail theft and receiving stolen property.
Police said Emmel drove a getaway car for 27-year-old Clinton Edwards after he allegedly stole merchandise valued at thousands of dollars from Walmart at Richland Town Centre on Feb. 2.
Police said he scuffled with store security before jumping into Emmel’s car and fleeing.
On Wednesday, police said, Emmel drove Edwards to Cherry Tree in Indiana County, where he was shot twice during a burglary attempt.
He allegedly fled to Armstrong County, where he was arrested by state police after another burglary.
Edwards was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital for bullet wounds and is being housed at Armstrong County Jail.
Emmel was taken into custody at her Liberty Park Road residence. She was processed Thursday and sent to Cambria County Prison for violating her parole conditions. She will arraigned on the new charges later.
