JOHNSTOWN —
A small Ferndale Avenue take-out restaurant that has developed a local following will be getting some national attention next week when The Food Channel comes to town.
CK Wings-n-Things owner Christopher Kurtz said the cable network contacted him a couple of months ago about being featured on “Outrageous Foods,” a new program that premiered Friday.
“They wanted me on that show, but they couldn’t fit it into their schedule,” Kurtz said.
“Then (the network representative) called me last night and surprised me. They are coming Thursday and they will be filming Friday.”
Kurtz said a number of his customers had contacted The Food Channel, petitioning for CK Wings to be featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” That program features restaurants that have been in business for decades, he said.
“I’ve only been in business since 2001,” Kurtz said.
The new program, “Outrageous Food,” is hosted by Tom Pizzica, a former contestant on the network’s “The Next Food Network Star” program. The Food Channel website says Pizzica “is on a quest to unearth the most jaw-dropping, eye-popping, occasionally heart-stopping foods in the country – dishes that give “outrageous” a whole new meaning.”
Scouts checked CK Wings on the Internet and contacted Kurtz to ask about its 1,176 flavors of wings, about 400 different sandwiches and 30 different pizzas.
But mainly, they wanted to know about Nuclear Hell 2, the eatery’s hottest wings.
Anyone daring enough to try the blistering fare must sign a waiver, but they get their picture taken for posterity. Before the CK Wings closed its original Bedford Street location, the photos were displayed on the Wall of Fame. Its new smaller quarters have moved the photos to the business’s My Space and Facebook Web pages.
Nuclear Hell 2 replaced the original Nuclear Hell flavor when someone successfully ate all 12, Kurtz said.
“So far the Nuclear Hell 2 record is four wings, but I have sauces up to Nuclear Hell 7,” he said.
But CK’s is more than hot wings. Flavors run the gamut from the expected barbecue, ranch, butter garlic and Cajun to the unusual like peanut butter and jelly, s’mores and bubble gum, to just about every fruit flavor imaginable – plus combinations of them all.
Kurtz said the “Outrageous Food” representative had him on the phone for two hours learning what to expect. He is rounding up some Nuclear Hell survivors to have another try at the record.
