Man accused of bank heist waives preliminary hearing

JOHNSTOWN — Jeffery M. McMullen, 50, of Northern Cambria, stood before a district judge Tuesday, accused of attempting to rob a bank for $1.

But rather than fight the charges before District Judge Michael Zungali in Hastings, McMullen waived his right to the preliminary hearing.

His case will be heard at a later date in Cambria County Court.

According to police reports, McMullen entered the AmeriServ bank branch in Carrolltown on Oct. 5 and gave a teller a note that said he was robbing the bank for the desired dollar bill.

After two employees thought it was a joke, a third one gave him the dollar and called police.

One of his notes read: “This is the United States of America Federal Bank Robbery, please hand over $1.00 ...”

Another note said: “FBI Custody (Preferbly Lorreto, PA)”

McMullen was lodged in the federal prison in Loretto, charged with three robbery offenses. Bond was set at $50,000 and a mental-health evaluation was requested.

He is being represented by Public Defender Maribeth Schaffer.

State police in Ebensburg are investigating a school bus crash that happened Monday on Route 36 in Clearfield Township. The Cambria Heights school bus was carrying 27 students when the driver apparently blacked out and sheared off a pine tree between the Chest Spring and Patton areas, schools superintendent Michael Strasser said. None of the high school or elementary students was hurt, he said. The students were triaged at the scene and released to their parents, Strasser said.
The driver was taken to Altoona Regional Hospital, he said.
