SOMERSET —
The Somerset County District Attorney’s Office is warning residents and businesses about a scam involving checks and a lottery.
Residents are being mailed a check along with a notification that they have won a lottery. Residents are being asked to cash the check to help cover the processing fee and to send money that is left over back to the sender, the DA’s office said.
The checks are worthless and once cashed, become the responsibility of the person who cashed the check.
The money is sent out of the country, therefore there is no recourse to charge or gather restitution, the DA’s office said.
People are being asked to call the police or DA’s office if they receive one of the bogus checks.
