Beware of bogus bills, area police advise

JOHNSTOWN — Richland Township police are warning businesses that counterfeit detection pens do not work on the bogus $100 bills that were passed recently in the township.

Township Detective Kevin Lehman said about 24 of the bogus bills were passed around March 6 or 7, and the stores did not learn the money was fake for a couple of days.

Police were then notified, but the counterfeiters, who Lehman said never stay long, were gone.

The Secret Service in Pittsburgh was notified and agents tied the case here to one they are investigating in Pittsburgh, Lehman said.

In the meantime, a few fake $100 bills may still be floating around here, and police are cautioning businessess and residents to be careful.

The fake bills have a waxy feel. In addition, if you rotate the bill, the large, green “100” will not change to black, Lehman said.

On a real $100 bill, the outline of Benjamin Franklin appears dark when held to the light. The outline on a fake one is greenish-yellow, he said.

State police in Ebensburg are investigating a school bus crash that happened Monday on Route 36 in Clearfield Township. The Cambria Heights school bus was carrying 27 students when the driver apparently blacked out and sheared off a pine tree between the Chest Spring and Patton areas, schools superintendent Michael Strasser said. None of the high school or elementary students was hurt, he said. The students were triaged at the scene and released to their parents, Strasser said.
The driver was taken to Altoona Regional Hospital, he said.
