Search opens for Santa Fund donors, recipients

JOHNSTOWN — The fourth annual Santa Fund was launched Tuesday at Boscov’s department store in The Galleria.

The Santa Fund is a community service program of The Tribune-Democrat that provides Christmas gifts for children up to 14 years of age whose families may be enduring hardship.

The fund is administered by the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, which receives all donations and processes payments for the gifts.

Boscov’s again is the exclusive gift provider for the Santa Fund.

“The Santa Fund is becoming a Johnstown area tradition,” said Mike Kane, executive director of the foundation. “It is part of Johnstown’s holiday season.”

In the coming days advertisements will begin running in The Tribune-Democrat informing people how to contribute to the Santa Fund and asking for names of potential recipients, Editor Chip Minemyer said.

The Family Center, a part of the Alternative Community Resource Program, will create a database of names of potential Santa Fund recipients.

Other Santa Fund partners are Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania, AmeriCorps, United Way of the Laurel Highlands and Penn’s Woods Council, Boy Scouts of America.

The fund has raised more than $55,000 in the past three years, Minemyer said.

Each year the fund provides gifts to more than 500 local youngsters, he said.

Nomination forms also are distributed to area community service agencies.

Boscov’s will match gifts with recipients by age and gender, said Rick Bausher, store manager.

DeeDee Bailey, regional head of public relations for Boscov’s, said that starting in the second week of November the store will provide an opportunity for customers to contribute to the Santa Fund when they make purchases at the store. Donors will be recognized through pinups at the cash register areas.

A collection box will be placed in the toy department for donations of unwrapped new toys, she added.

The final day to nominate a youngster to receive a gift is Nov. 19.

The final day to contribute to the fund is Dec. 2.
