The Stonycreek Quemahoning Initiative is hoping area residents cast their vote for the Stonycreek River as Pennsylvania’s River of the Year for 2011.
The state’s River of the Year is an honor bestowed upon a commonwealth waterway to elevate public awareness about that resource and recognize important conservation needs and achievements.
The River of the Year Program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers.
In addition to the Stonycreek, five other rivers are in the running for the state honor.
The Stonycreek River has been transformed from a virtually dead environment 30 years ago to one that now supports 22 species of fish, notes the Stonycreek Quemahoning Initiative.
New businesses have started because of the water quality improvements and recreational improvements to the river. Stores have seen an increase in sales and service along the Stonycreek Corridor.
The tremendous amount of effort that has gone into turning the Stonycreek from a wasteland to a thriving watershed needs to be celebrated, the Stonycreek Quemahoning Initiative says. It is a measure not just of the renewal of a river, but of a commitment to renew the communities that parallel the river, the initiative notes.
