JOHNSTOWN — Because of inclement weather, West End Food Pantry, 1348 Virginia Ave., Johnstown, will be closed on Thursday.

Weather permitting, the pantry will reopen Jan. 31.

2 accidents attributed to road conditions

Police and emergency crews responded to two minor crashes Tuesday, both due to winter road conditions, a Cambria County 911 supervisor said.

One was in Richland Township at the intersection of Park Road and Kring Street, and the other was on Route 22 in Cresson Township at the Portage exit ramp.

No serious injuries were reported.

Ferndale power restored after outage

About 650 Penelec customers in Ferndale lost power around 5 p.m. Tuesday when a piece of equipment failed, Penelec spokesman Dennis Platt said.

A crew was able to restore power to all customers around 6 p.m., he said.

WQED radio plans to celebrate 40 years

Classical WQED-FM 89.3 will launch a yearlong celebration Friday marking its 40th anniversary as “the voice of the arts in western Pennsylvania.”

From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, WQED-FM will broadcast its annual “birthday” celebration.

The broadcast will include a look back at the year 1973, well wishes from members of the community and a ticket giveaway for the premiere of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s 2013-2014 season with Mozart’s “Symphony No. 40.”

A television special about the 40th anniversary will be broadcast live from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday and simulcast on WQED-FM 89.3.

Viewers are asked to share their celebratory messages and feedback on social media using hashtag WQEDFM40.

Training available for Marcellus truckers

SOMERSET – Somerset County Technology Center and the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center are offering training for people interested in becoming licensed commercial truck drivers for the Marcellus Shale gas industry.

The program is sponsored by ShaleNET, an organization funded by the U.S. Department of Labor to recruit and train gas industry workers.

Those interested in the training must complete a number of steps, including a test of adult basic education.

To schedule educational testing, call the Greater Johnstown vo-tech at 266-6073, ext. 221.

Prospective trainees will be responsible for a physical, drug test, background checks, transportation permit and endorsements.

Tuition for the training will be paid if a student is selected.

An orientation meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 11 at Somerset County Technology Center, 281 Technology Drive, Somerset. Those who wish to attend the orientation must preregister by Feb. 1 by emailing name, address and phone number to twojcicki@sctc.net or calling 443-3651, ext. 6156.

Training is scheduled to begin March 18 and is expected to last five to six weeks. The sessions will be full time Monday through Friday and may involve shifts.

Participants will earn a Class A driver’s license with endorsements in doubles, triples, tankers and hazardous materials.

Almost certainly, no Cambria County Special Emergency Response Team members will ever be called upon to create a small bridge out of two pieces of wood and rope, use the newfangled walkway to get a group of individuals from one point to another, pick up an object at the end of the course and then figure out a way back to the starting point.
But the skills SERT officers gain by participating in drills like those – leadership, teamwork, trust and creativity – can be invaluable when they are serving and protecting the community.

State police investigating school bus crash
State police in Ebensburg are investigating a school bus crash that happened Monday on Route 36 in Clearfield Township. The Cambria Heights school bus was carrying 27 students when the driver apparently blacked out and sheared off a pine tree between the Chest Spring and Patton areas, schools superintendent Michael Strasser said. None of the high school or elementary students was hurt, he said. The students were triaged at the scene and released to their parents, Strasser said.
The driver was taken to Altoona Regional Hospital, he said.
