Temperatures take a leap in region

JOHNSTOWN — It may have felt like spring earlier this week, but winter weather is back.

The Johnstown region experienced mild temperatures and rain showers on Wednesday, but cold air today is bringing back seasonal weather that is more typical of late January and early February.

Mark Paquette, a meteorologist with AccuWeather in State College, said the area had temperatures above 50 degrees for a

24-hour period thanks to a warm air mass cutting across the Midwest.

“It’s pretty incredible to see that in the heart of winter,” Paquette said.

But as today progresses, temperatures will drop into the 30s and then into the 20s in the overnight hours into Friday.

“It’ll become windy, and that’ll usher in sharply colder air that will produce some snow showers,” Paquette said.

No significant snow accumulations are expected throughout the weekend.

Because of temperature inversion – a situation where warm air is on top of cooler air – some areas around the region, depending on altitude, experienced varying temperatures on Wednesday.

For example, at 10 a.m. Wednesday it was 42 degrees in Moxham and 63 degrees in Richland Township.

“Normally, it’s colder in the mountains than the valleys, but once in a while the opposite can happen,” Paquette said. “It’s actually pretty neat when it occurs.”
