Flight 93 visitor center work to begin

SHANKSVILLE – Groundbreaking is scheduled this summer for a visitor center and other improvements at the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville.

National Park Service officials told the Flight 93 Advisory Commission on Saturday that final documents will be ready for contracting no later than March 19.

The visitor center will house permanent exhibits and have a viewing window that will allow people to look down to the site.

The $20 million work also includes a pedestrian bridge over the wetlands and perhaps a learning center.

The final phase to be completed by September 2016 will be the 93-foot Tower of Voices containing 40 wind chimes, one for each passenger and crew member.

Driving safety classes offered in Somerset Co.

Two-day AARP driving safety classes are being offered at most senior centers in Somerset County.

Drivers will learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws and rules of the road, how to deal with aggressive drivers and how to handle problem situations such as left turns, right-of-way, Interstate highway traffic, trucks and blind spots.

Classes are open to anyone age 50 and older.

Those age 55 and older may qualify for a discount on car insurance for a three-year period.

A one-day refresher class for those who have taken a two-day class also is available.

Participants should call the senior center where they wish to attend classes to sign up.

Class size is limited, and registration is required.

Senior centers offering the classes are Somerset, 443-2681; Windber Center for Life, 467-5912; Meyersdale, 634-0713; and Confluence, 395-5117.

There is a materials fee.

Piggy bank funds will aid Learning Lamp

An annual fundraiser to benefit The Learning Lamp will be held throughout February and March.

All donations collected will support the purchase of classroom supplies, food and time from teachers to work with children on math, reading, spelling and other homework.

The Learning Lamp serves about 100 children each year at locations in the Moxham, Prospect and Oakhurst neighborhoods of Johnstown.

Information: 262-0732 or www.thelearninglamp.org.
