Theft suspect charged

Gun-toting citizen may be in trouble also, police say

JOHNSTOWN — A Salix man who police said was stealing items from unlocked vehicles was stopped by a gun-toting resident.

Now both men may face charges.

West Hills Regional police said that Gary Michael Dobis, 27, was trying to enter vehicles in the parking lot of Norwood Gardens Apartments in Lower Yoder Township on Monday night but was stopped by a resident.

The resident, whose name was not released, pulled up in his car and pointed a .45 caliber pistol at Dobis, police said in the criminal complaint.

“The resident took it upon himself to try to stop this guy from going into cars and he pulled a weapon out,” West Hills police Sgt. George Musulin III said.

The man with the gun was stopped near the scene and is expected to be charged with reckless endangerment for pointing the firearm, Musulin said.

Upper Yoder police took Dobis into custody near Westmont Rexall Drug Store on Goucher Street.

He was charged with 12 counts of attempted theft from a motor vehicle after taking several electronic items including a cellphone and a camera.

He also was charged with drug possession after police found he was carrying Suboxone pills, a narcotic.

Dobis also faces charges of public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and four counts of prohibited offensive weapons. Police said he was carrying four ninja-type throwing stars.

Dobis, of the 100 block of Poplar Drive, was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.

“Due to his drug and alcohol levels, he was taken to the hospital,” Musulin said. He will be arraigned once he is released from the hospital.
