Communities gathering items for storm victims

GALLITZIN — Moved by the devastation on the eastern seaboard left by Hurricane Sandy, residents of the Gallitzin, Tunnelhill, Cresson and Ashville area are lending a hand.

An initiative, started Sunday on Facebook by Gallitzin Councilman Roger Renninger, is collecting basic items for victims of the storm.

The goods collected over the next several days will be taken on Thursday to Mantua Township, N.J., a hard-hit community in the southern tip of the state.

Renninger and other volunteers plan to use a Gallitzin Borough-owned trailer and pickup to move the donations, but if the community’s response is as good as hoped, they will look for a larger vehicle.

“It’s for a good cause, and people want to help. They really want to help,” the councilman said.

Renninger has had several conversations with the police chief of Mantua Township, who told him the greatest needs are for bottled water, canned food and personal hygiene products. There also is a growing need for pet food, he said.

Items can be dropped off at the Gallitzin Borough Building between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily or at Gallitzin fire hall or Gallitzin Ambulance building during evening hours.

Donations will be accepted through Wednesday.
