SOMERSET —
A 100-year-old bridge in Middlecreek Township will be getting a new lease on life thanks to some needed repairs approved Tuesday by the Somerset County commissioners.
Concrete repairs and underpinning maintenance are scheduled for August at the Mickey Bridge on Falls Creek Road, county engineer Craig Weaver of The EADS Group said Tuesday.
“August is a good time to do that when the water is low,” Weaver said.
The Mickey Bridge was built in 1912, Weaver noted.
Although it is not in danger of failing now, the repairs will prevent future deterioration and more expensive construction, he told commissioners.
“It’s a worthwhile project to patch the bridge,” Commissioner John Vatavuk said.
In a related matter, the commissioners also approved $32,109 more for an engineering and inspection contract for construction of a park-and-ride lot in Jenner Township.
EADS is preparing the designs and permitting for the state-funded project along Route 30 near Boswell. Construction is expected next year.

Power in Moxham expected to be restored by 1 p.m. Tuesday
One person was sent to the hospital Tuesday after a vehicle slammed into a utility pole in Johnstown leaving some customers without power, authorities said. The one-vehicle crash happened on Bridge Street in the Moxham section of Johnstown at 1:14 a.m., fire Chief Anthony Kovacic said. When firefighters arrived, they found utility wires down, he said. Denny Platt, area manager for Penelec, said 402 customers initially lost power, including North American Hoganas High Alloys, a business which is located on Bridge Street. Power was restored to all but nine customers by 3:30 a.m., he said. The remaining nine customers are expected to have power restored by 1 p.m., Platt said.
