WINDBER —
A portion of Graham Avenue in Windber was closed Saturday when the front of D’Arc’s Pizza Shop collapsed, authorities said.
The balcony of the pizza shop, which is located at 2013 Graham Ave., where Graham meets 21st Street, collapsed around 3 a.m.
The sidewalk and street were covered with bricks, wood and other debris, Windber fire Chief Craig Cicon said.
Cicon said firefighters were unsure how many of the four apartments above the pizzeria were occupied.
“We didn’t know how many people were still in the structure,” he said. Firefighters forced entry into all the apartments and found two that were occupied. They hustled a tenant from each apartment through a side door, Cicon said.
No injuries were reported.
It’s unclear why the structure collapsed.
A structural engineer is searching for the cause, Cicon said.
The timing of the collapse was fortunate. During daylight hours, Graham Avenue is busy with traffic, and pedestrians often walk past the pizza shop.
“We averted a tragedy with it coming down at 3 a.m. instead of 3 p.m.,” Cicon said.
Graham Avenue from 18th Street to 22th Street is closed, as is a portion of Somerset Avenue.
Firefighters from Windber and Richland responded along with Paint Township police.

Emergency response team hones skills at training camp
Almost certainly, no Cambria County Special Emergency Response Team members will ever be called upon to create a small bridge out of two pieces of wood and rope, use the newfangled walkway to get a group of individuals from one point to another, pick up an object at the end of the course and then figure out a way back to the starting point.
But the skills SERT officers gain by participating in drills like those – leadership, teamwork, trust and creativity – can be invaluable when they are serving and protecting the community. -

State police in Ebensburg are investigating a school bus crash that happened Monday on Route 36 in Clearfield Township. None of the high school or elementary students was hurt, he said. The students were triaged at the scene and released to their parents, Strasser said.
The driver was taken to Altoona Regional Hospital, he said. -
