Roof collapse damages vehicles in Old Conemaugh

JOHNSTOWN — The owner of a storage facility in Old Conemaugh Borough that collapsed spent Wednesday assessing the damage.

Carmen Truscello said the roof of the 46-by-110-foot building fell in.

The Hudson Street structure housed 13 or 14 vehicles, including an antique fire truck owned by East Taylor Township Volunteer Fire Company.

No one was injured.

“We got a number of the vehicles out,” Truscello said.

A fire truck, five cars, two campers, a motorcycle and a 14-foot boat were inside when a portion of the roof collapsed Tuesday night.

Several of the vehicles, including the fire truck, were damaged.

“I don’t know the extent of the damage,” Johnstown fire Chief Anthony Kovacic said.

The fire truck is valued at $15,000, an East Taylor firefighter said. Damage to the vehicle has not been assessed, he said.

Kovacic said a buildup of snow on the roof might have caused it to buckle.

Truscello said he was waiting for his insurance company to help determine the cause.

The area has been hit by a spate of roof collapses this winter.

“Unfortunately, with the weight of the snow, we’re seeing this happen more frequently,” Kovacic said. “We’ve had porch roofs collapse, but this is the most significant.”
