Striking Penn Hills teachers to return to classrooms Wednesday

PENN HILLS — Striking teachers at one of the Pittsburgh area’s largest school districts are scheduled to return to class Wednesday, weather permitting.

The 415 teachers in the Penn Hills School District began a walkout Thursday that has affected more than 5,000 students. The state Department of Education has said they must return by Thursday so that students can receive the required 180 days of instruction by June 15.

The teachers have been without a contract since August. The two sides are scheduled to return to the table Tuesday.

The district last offered a three-year deal with raises of 3.26 percent and 3.5 percent and teachers contributing 8 percent for health insurance, up from 1.2 percent. The teachers want a five-year contract with raises of about 6 percent a year, lower health contributions for some and better benefits.
