NEW – Schools closing early in anticipation of snow

JOHNSTOWN — With snow beginning to fall across the Cambria-Somerset region, many local schools are closing early today.

Districts closing early include Bishop McCort, Berlin-Brothersvalley, Central Cambria, Conemaugh Township, Ferndale, Forest Hills, Greater Johnstown, North Star, Penn Cambria, Portage, Richland, Rockwood, Shade, Shanksville, Somerset, Westmont Hilltop and Windber. Many evening activities are also being postponed.

AccuWeather is predicting about five inches of snow for the Johnstown area over the next 24 hours, and more on Wednesday.

AccuWeather said a low-pressure system from the Ohio Valley will meet another low-pressure developing near the Mid-Atlantic coast. Snow is expected to develop during the day and grow in intensity throughout the afternoon and overnight.

Total expected accumulation for the Johnstown area is between eight and 12 inches, AccuWeather said.

A winter snow warning is in effect, meaning driving could become hazardous.

Also, PennDOT's planned public meeting and plans display for the proposed Route 2037 bridge replacement over the Casselman River in Garrett Borough will be rescheduled because of weather. The meeting was to be held at the Garrett Volunteer Fire Department in Meyersdale on Wednesday. The meeting will be rescheduled for a later date.
