BEDFORD — A Cresson woman was killed and two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday on Route 30 near the entrance to Bedford Square.
Alissa M. Hoover, 27, a driver, was pronounced dead at the scene by Bedford County Coroner Samuel Gordon, state police said.
A passenger in Hoover’s car, Amanda M. McConnell, 32, of Cresson, and the driver of the other vehicle, Gary E. Washington, 52, of Bedford, were injured, police said. Both were initially treated at UPMC Bedford Memorial and then transferred to Altoona Regional Health System, where McConnell was listed in fair condition and Washington in serious condition.
Police said Washington was eastbound and Hoover was westbound.
Washington moved into the center turning lane to make a left turn when his pickup went out of control and crossed into the westbound lane, striking the Hoover car, police said.
Somerset superintendent resigns
SOMERSET – Somerset Area school board at its meeting Monday unanimously accepted a letter of resignation from school Superintendent David Pastrick. He was granted a paid leave of absence at a board meeting Nov. 3.
The school district and Pastrick issued the following joint news release:
“The Somerset Area School District and superintendent Dr. Pastrick announce Dr. Pastrick’s voluntary resignation effective March 15. Dr. Pastrick’s decision to resign was made after discussion with the Board of School Directors and rendered as a result of a dialogue among the parties.”
At Monday’s board meeting, Board President James Cascio said Acting Superintendent Krista Mathias will remain in that position and no other staff changes are pending.
‘Willie Wonka’ plays rescheduled
Due to inclement weather during the weekend, Windber High School drama club’s production of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the high school auditorium.
Pre-sale tickets will be honored at each show, and tickets will be on sale at the door.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens.
Johnstown vo-tech being honored
Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center will be among schools to be honored today as outstanding by the state Bureau of Career and Technical Education.
The schools will be recognized at a breakfast at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers, said Dick Steinmeier, the bureau’s CTE adviser.
Driver subject of hit-run probe
SOMERSET – State police are investigating a Manns Choice driver for hit and run following a wreck Monday evening.
Police said a Plymouth Neon driven by Ryan Patrick Will, 21, hit the back of a Buick LeSabre driven by Thomas Charles Miller, 64, of Berlin.
The accident – at Route 219 at the Garrett Shortcut – caused only minor damage and no injuries. But police said Will drove off without leaving his contact information.
Poker run fundraiser set Sunday
VINCO – A poker run is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday to raise money for Betty Labarger, an area woman recovering from injuries received in a crash.
Alan Martin, president of Chickaree Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club, said the event is for snowmobilers, but anybody can play cards at the clubhouse at Mitchell Park for $5 per hand.
“(Labarger) has been a driving force to the township here,” Martin said Tuesday. “We just wanted to give back to her.”
All proceeds will go toward her medical costs, he said, including sales from the kitchen, which will open at 11 a.m., a raffle and a 50/50 drawing.
