JOHNSTOWN — Funeral arrangements for U.S. Rep. John Murtha have been tentatively scheduled.
Visitation for the popular Democrat, who died Monday of complications from gallbladder surgery, is scheduled Sunday and Monday at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, at 1622 Menoher Blvd. in Westmont, said Murtha’s chief of staff, John Hugya.
A funeral service was set Tuesday at Westmont Presbyterian Church, 601 Luzerne St., Hugya said.
Times for the visitation and funeral service have not been set yet.
The congressman will be laid to rest following the service at Grandview Cemetery. The cemetery is located just a short distance from his Westmont home.
On Saturday, the 77-year-old congressman officially marked 36 years of service as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the longest-serving congressman in Pennsylvania history.
Murtha first ran for office in 1968, but failed to unseat the late Republican U.S. Rep. John Saylor in a close race for the former 22nd Congressional District seat.
The next spring, he was elected to the state House in a special election following the death of Rep. Edward W. McNally.
Murtha was elected to the 12th Congressional District seat in a special election Feb. 5, 1974, following Saylor’s death in October 1973.
Murtha won every election since that time.
Supporters described Murtha as a champion for the 12th district’s residents and communities.
The late congressman was recognized as an expert on military issues and a leader behind the scenes.
