Fallen Pa. Guardsman buried in national cemetery

CECIL — An Army National Guardsman killed in Afghanistan has been laid to rest in a national cemetery in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Sgt. First Class Robert Fike, of Conneautville was killed by a roadside bomb June 11 while on foot patrol.

When not serving in the National Guard, the 38-year-old Fike was a prison guard at the State Correctional Institution-Albion, near his northwestern Pennsylvania home.

But his funeral was at a church in Trafford, the Pittsburgh suburb where he grew up and was remembered as a doting father and a mentor to younger soldiers.

Corporal Bo Zimmerman says Fike “was always pushing me to be a better leader. I can’t say enough about him.”

Fike’s casket was buried at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Cecil Township.
