Fashion designer visiting region

JOHNSTOWN — A fashion designer featured in a popular reality TV show is making a stop in the area to talk about his work.

Kayne Gillaspie, a former competitor on “Project Runway” and “Project Runway All Stars,” will meet with students at Northern Cambria middle and high schools today and share his story about what led him into a career in fashion.

Ronnie Weaver, who has a son at the high school and is owner of Bridal Suite in the Richland Township, was instrumental in bringing Gillaspie to the region.

Her boutique carries dresses by Johnathan Kayne, the name under which Gillaspie designs.

“We decided to host an event in the store this weekend to showcase his prom line, and I thought it would be nice since he’d be here to bring him to our school,” Weaver said. “I spoke to him about visiting the school district, and he said he’d love to do it because he loves talking with kids.”

In addition, Bridal Suite donated a Johnathan Kayne light-up prom dress to the high school and students can buy chances to win it.

Gillaspie will pull the winner’s name while at the school.

“I think he’s going to try to inspire the students to follow their dreams and to not give up, and tell them that his successes only came with hard work,” Weaver said.

Superintendent John Jubas said he appreciates having someone who is nationally recognized come to the school to interact with students.

“It’s a great opportunity for our students and community, and we’re looking forward to students talking to him about setting goals and also helping them get on the career path to success,” Jubas said.

Gillaspie will appear at Bridal Suite, 406 Town Centre Drive, from 1 to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to

4 p.m. Saturday.
