Even tough-guy, hard-weathered, leather-clad, tattoo-covered Harley-Davidson riders can enjoy a few peaceful minutes around a cool swimming pool.
It’s especially refreshing after getting covered in dirt and baked in the hot sun while roaring down the highway all afternoon.
A few such bikers even took the time to dive into the refreshing water at Nanty Glo Park and Pool during the facility’s fifth annual Pool ’n Pork, an event held in conjunction with Thunder in the Valley.
Bringing new visitors, like out-of-town motorcyclists, to the park, which features a pool, campground, stocked fishing pond and pavilions, was one of the reasons organizers started hosting the gathering.
“Our first plan, our first intent, when we started this five years ago was to get people to discover this park,” said Nanty Glo Municipal Authority Vice President Jay Evans.
“We’re really proud of it. We feel that we have a hidden jewel here as far as the park goes. ... There’s a lot to offer here. That was our main purpose when we started, and, of course, hopefully to make a little bit of money to make it better.”
Since the beginning, slow-cooked, wood-smoked barbecue has been an important part of the party.
The name Pool ’n Pork itself is a play on words, as in pullin’ pork. Brad and Michele Kubat, owners of Pit Stop Sports Bar & Grill, have done the cooking every year, supplying revelers with brisket, pork, hot sausage and chicken sandwiches, along with other foods.
“It’s a local community event,” Brad Kubat said. “It’s good to be able to help out and support the community. They’re really good to us. They always treat us good. They always patronize our business, so we try to help out whenever we can.”
Pool ’n Pork got under way on Thursday. It will conclude tonight with a fireworks display and musical acts.
Friday’s schedule was highlighted by a swimsuit contest that attracted 14 contestants. It was judged by five individuals, including former Cambria County Commissioner Milan Gjurich and Sherry Stalley, a Republican candidate in this year’s 71st Legislative District race for the state House.
The event gave some of the participants, such as Megan Bricker of Hastings, a chance to visit the grounds for the first time. She described the park by saying, “It’s nice. Nice pool, nice playground, nice location.”
