PITTSBURGH — Authorities in western Pennsylvania have identified three young suburban Pittsburgh residents killed when a car plunged off an interstate down a hillside and crashed into a grove of trees.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office says 20-year-old Derek Phillips, of Bethel Park, 20-year-old David Rizzo Jr. of Upper St. Clair and 18-year-old Tara Schulz, of Upper St. Clair were killed when their car failed to negotiate a curve on I-376 at 2 a.m. Sunday just before the entrance to the Fort Pitt tunnels.
State police say the car went off the interstate and plunged about halfway down the wooded hillside, landing with its underside wedged against trees above the Banksville Road commercial district. The 18-year-old driver and an 18-year-old passenger were able to get out of the vehicle and call for help.
