Gov. Tom Corbett on Thursday helped to dedicate a new plant near Johnstown that serves the Marcellus Shale industry and that he said was born of the American spirit.
Corbett also took a tour of Environmental Tank & Container, a manufacturing arm of Johnstown Welding and Fabrication that is located in the building once used by the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. along Cramer Pike in Tanneryville.
The plant opened in the spring with a handful of workers but has grown to 80 employees, said Bill Polacek, JWF president. The company expects to hire 70 more people next year.
The plant also anticipates $36 million in sales for 2012, he said.
About 150 business and economic development leaders, municipal officials, plant customers and employees attended the event.
Corbett commended Polacek and everyone else associated with the effort of bringing the new business to life.
Corbett said what he enjoys seeing is someone such as Polacek, who is not directly involved in the Marcellus Shale industry, develop ways to use it to create opportunities for himself and others.
“I can make a buck,” Corbett said. “I can help somebody. Give people jobs.
“That’s the American way.”
