The Greater Johnstown School Board has received Pennsylvania’s “After School Champions” award.
The award was presented by the Pennsylvania Afterschool/Youth Development Network at the Hilton Hotel in Harrisburg. Barbara Parkins, superintendent of the Greater Johnstown School District, and several board members were in attendance.
The board was honored for Greater Johnstown’s Pride and Tradition, After School Live and Trojan After School programs, instituted 11 years ago to give students places to be from 3 to
6 p.m. when school officials say a lack of adult supervision can put youngsters at risk. The programs have grown to a more educational format during the years that helps students on any level to improve academic skills.
The Greater Johnstown board was nominated for the award by Ron Kikta, executive director of the Cambria County Child Development Corp., a community sponsor of the after-school activities.
Richard Unger, board president, said in receiving the award that he is proud of the cooperative spirit of the Johnstown business and social organizations in the development of the after-school programs. He praised fellow board members for volunteering their time to the projects.
He credited the after-school programs for helping an increased number of graduates move on to after high school programs and colleges.
