Feb. 29 wasn’t a busy day in the maternity units of area hospitals, but a few babies decided to make their appearance.
The Leap Year babies join a select number of people who age very slowly – celebrating actual birthdays only once every four years.
At Windber Medical Center, an air traffic controller for the U.S. Air Force welcomed her first child shortly after midnight.
Christy and Mark Brothers of Somerset County were introduced to Regan Lane at 1:11 a.m. The new baby weighed in at 8 pounds, 1 ounce and was 20 inches long.
Her mother said the newborn was born with a full head of brown hair.
“I usually don’t think newborns are too cute, but she’s not bad,” Christy Brothers said.
Regan joins a 16-year-old half sister.
The baby was actually due today, but Brothers said she and her husband talked about the possibility of having a Leap Year baby.
“I was thinking there is no way that I am going to have a baby on Feb. 29,” Brothers said. “What are the odds?”
