SOMERSET — A man impersonated a borough employee to gain access to the home of an elderly resident on East Main Street, Somerset police said.

A white man driving a white pickup arrived at the woman’s home Friday morning and identified himself as a borough water department employee, police said. He entered the woman’s home after telling her the water pressure was low.

The man went into the basement while the woman remained upstairs. He left the home after telling her there would be no charge for his services.

When caught, the man will be charged with impersonating a public official, a misdemeanor, police Chief Randy Cox said.

Police are trying to determine if anything was taken from the home.

“We know a crime has been committed,” Cox said. “We’re not sure if there was a theft.”

No other incidents have been reported, Cox said.

“We’re just trying to get the word out to the community,” he said.

Police offered these tips:

• All Somerset Borough employees wear identification cards.

• All Somerset Borough public works vehicles are red with borough emblems on the doors.

• Somerset Borough public works employees will never ask to enter a home to check the water pressure.

If residents are unsure of a person’s identity, they should contact the borough office at 443-2661 or call 911 for police.
