Blaze called in as firefighters ready for parade

BAKERTON

Firefighters from across the northern Cambria area found themselves doing double duty Sunday afternoon when a fire broke out just as the volunteers were lining up for a parade as part of the annual Carrolltown Firemen’s Festival.

“They were just getting ready to start the parade,” said Sue Byrne, a member of the auxiliary of the Carrolltown Fire Company. “We kind of made it work.”

The fire, which broke out shortly before 2 p.m., was in an unoccupied house at Number 1 Road and Deveaux Street in West Carroll Township, a supervisor at the Cambria County 911 dispatch center said.

Volunteers from the Hope and Spangler volunteer fire companies from Northern Cambria and Patton Volunteer Fire Company, in Carrolltown for the parade, assisted at the fire.

The festival, the major fundraising event for the fire company each year, kicked off Friday and concluded Sunday night.
