A Johnstown man who fled the city while facing charges in a city shooting was captured Saturday in Cherokee, N.C., District Attorney Kelly Callihan said Monday.
ShyTyquon Lawton, 27, was taken into custody without incident and lodged in a jail in North Carolina to await extradition back to Pennsylvania.
The Cambria County drug task force and county detectives had received information about Lawton’s whereabouts, and the Cherokee police, acting on that information, were able to locate the fugitive, she said.
When he was taken into custody, Lawton allegedly had ecstasy pills and marijuana as well as $1,500 in cash. The authorities there charged him with possession of the drugs, Callihan said.
She was unsure how soon he would be brought back here to face the charges. Factors that could hold up his return include his fighting extradition and how long it will take for the drug charges there to be disposed of, the prosecutor said.
Lawton is accused of shooting Cardell “CJ” Clinton in the left hip early on June 24 outside Edder’s Bar In the Oakhurst section of the city.
The shooting set off a series of events that led to the fatal police shooting of 27-year-old Elip Cheatham on North Sheridan Street, just blocks from the bar.
Clinton, who was a passenger in Cheatham’s car said that Cheatham was driving him to the hospital.
But authorities have said that Cheatham accelerated his car at police and a stopped vehicle and fired at the oncoming car, fatally wounding the driver.
Lawton was released prison after posting $75,000 bond. He was scheduled to be in county court for a bond revocation hearing in unrelated cases because of the new shooting charges, but he failed to appear in court July 6.
