JOHNSTOWN —
A turkey fryer caused a small fire in the 300 block of Arthur Street in Johnstown on Thursday.
The incident was reported to the Johnstown Fire Department at 12:26 p.m.
Either splashing grease or faulty equipment caused the accidental fire, Assistant Chief Bob Statler said.
The flames spread to a wooden deck and nearby brush. Some house siding received minimal damage, he said.
No injuries were reported.
Town seeks lamppost ‘adopters’
LIGONIER – The Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce is looking for people interested in adopting a lamppost for Christmas.
The cost is $15 for a gift tag with a personalized holiday greeting or a message in memory of a loved one.
Participants can sign up at the chamber office, 120 E. Main St., and pick a lamppost.
The project helps to fund decoration of the Ligonier Diamond for the holidays.
Bikers rev up toy drive
Bikers Helping Kids Foundation of Windber and Renegade Rebels of Nanty Glo will hold a toy drive for needy kids in the area.
Monetary donations and new toys can be dropped of from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 1 at Quaker Steak & Lube on Scalp Avenue.
Johnstown U-Haul has donated a truck to be used for the toy drive.
Air Force recruiting office opens
The U.S. Air Force has reopened a recruitment office in Richland Township.
A man with western Pennsylvania ties, Staff Sgt. Sean P. Malone, has been assigned to handle recruitment at The Galleria mall office, which Malone said was dormant for more than a year.
Malone is a native of Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, who said his background includes nuclear weapon security and law enforcement. He said he represented the Air Force on Secret Service missions for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Event raises $410 for cancer center
State Sen. John Wozniak, D-Westmont, and Crime Stoppers pledged their support of Breast Cancer Awareness month by sponsoring the “Stephanie’s Pink Pumpkin” fundraiser held at Martin’s stores in Ebensburg and Johnstown and at Panera Bread in Richland Township.
The fundraiser, which featured pink pumpkins painted by local student volunteers from Pitt-Johnstown athletics, collected $410 in donations.
The donation was presented to the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center to support patient care services at the center.
Maple Winds grows biggest gourd
PORTAGE – Maple Winds Care Center in Portage was the winner of AseraCare Hospice’s annual Pumpkin Growing Contest.
Earlier this year, participating long-term care facilities and personal care homes in Cambria, Somerset and Indiana counties were given seeds and instructions on growing a competitive pumpkin. Residents were encouraged to participate.
Diane Miller, activities director at Maple Winds, was in charge of caring for the award-winning pumpkin, which weighed in at
34 pounds and was 43 inches in circumference.
Residents at the center were treated to a party to celebrate their championship gourd.
