In brief: Route 219 closed after crash ruptures gas line

JOHNSTOWN — A Route 219 crash near Berlin ruptured a natural gas line and forced responders to close the highway for three hours, state police said.

Investigators said they had to evacuate surrounding homes as a precaution, saying natural gas was rapidly leaking after a

Berlin man crashed his Pontiac into the line and hit a utility pole.

The crash occurred on Berlin Plank Road near the Circle 219 Bar around 4:50 a.m. Sunday.

Tyler R. Vought, 22, of Berlin, swerved to avoid a deer on the road and hit the line, state police said.

Vought was uninjured, state police said.

Somerset County 911 officials said Somerset and Berlin volunteer fire departments responded, along with crews from Penelec and Columbia Gas, which capped the gas well about two hours after the crash.

The road was reopened at 7:42 a.m., a Somerset 911 supervisor said.

Almost certainly, no Cambria County Special Emergency Response Team members will ever be called upon to create a small bridge out of two pieces of wood and rope, use the newfangled walkway to get a group of individuals from one point to another, pick up an object at the end of the course and then figure out a way back to the starting point.
But the skills SERT officers gain by participating in drills like those – leadership, teamwork, trust and creativity – can be invaluable when they are serving and protecting the community.
