In Brief | Hearing delayed in homicide case

PORTAGE — A preliminary hearing scheduled for today for the suspect in a beating death has

been continued until Jan. 22, District Judge Galen Decort’s office said.

The defendant, Gregory Conzo, 50, of Summerhill Township, is accused of hitting 37-year-old Michael Pcola, also of the township, on the head with a baseball bat

Nov. 5 at Pcola’s residence.

Pcola died two days later at Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.

Authorities alleged that Pcola was attacked when he went to check on his mother, Lois Pcola, and his sister, Maria Pcola, who were arguing with Conzo, police said.

During the altercation, Conzo hit Maria Pcola on an arm with the bat before hitting Michael Pcola, police said.

The delay in the hearing was sought by the defense, the magistrate’s office said.

Police subdue man found in bus shelter

Johnstown police said they tried to awaken an unconscious man they found inside the CamTran bus shelter at Broad Street and Fairfield Avenue on Saturday.

But when Irish M. McCall awoke, police said he was not friendly.

“(McCall) became aggressive and started to swing at officers,” police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause.

It took two officers and a stun gun to end the struggle.

After McCall was taken to the Public Safety Building, police said they found the reason why he was uncooperative: “14 individually packaged baggies of marijuana were located in his rear pants pocket.”

McCall, 26, of Johnstown, was arraigned Sunday by on-call District Judge Leonard Grecek of  Roxbury on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, public drunkenness and drug possession.

McCall was sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $20,000 bond.
