St. Francis president ending 10-year term

LORETTO — The Rev. Gabriel Zeis is preparing to step down from his post as president of St. Francis University, according to university officials.

Zeis is wrapping up his

10-year term, which was decided upon his appointment to the presidency.

He announced his coming retirement in June during a meeting of the school’s board of trustees.

The university’s presidential transition process is already under way.

The board and the Sacred Heart Province of the Third Order Regular are generating a list of potential successors.

“We wanted to make sure that the university community is prepared to make the transition,” said Marie Young, director of marketing and communications at St. Francis.

A news release from the college in January stated that Zeis’ replacement would “continue the commitment to fundraising, strategic academic growth and campus development.”

In his time leading the college, the most dramatic change Zeis put in place was the

adoption of academic schools. St. Francis students now register for courses in the schools of business, arts and letters, sciences, and health sciences.

The Roman Catholic university also will open a 70,000-square-foot science center for the fall semester.

“Mr. Zeis was instrumental in that process,” Young said.

The Franciscan Order will help Zeis move into his next role.

Although a timeline for the transition has not been established, more details – as well as an official statement from Zeis – are expected to surface at a March 14 meeting of the university’s board of trustees.

Man jailed in jewelry store robbery
The man who police said robbed a Richland Township jewelry store on Saturday was jailed the same day, authorities said.
Shane Bradley Neisner, 26, of the 1200 block of Killiwhat Street, entered Littman Jewelers at The Galleria shortly before 2:30 p.m. and asked to see a diamond ring, township police said.
Neisner allegedly snatched the $5,000 ring from the hand of the salesperson and ran out of the store. He returned to the mall a short time later and sold the ring to TK Jewelers Bench for $300, police said.
He was arraigned by on-call District Judge Max Pavlovich of Richland on charges of robbery, retail theft, receiving stolen property and theft by deception.
Neisner was sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $20,000.
