BAKERSVILLE —
A Bakersville-area man was charged with arson Monday after authorities said he carried out his threat to burn down his house.
Jay D. Shaulis, 47, of the 100 block of Trout Farm Road, set fire to his Jefferson Township house on June 27, state police in Somerset alleged.
Shaulis was the only person at home when the fire started on the porch, troopers said.
Investigators interviewed Shaulis at Somerset Hospital the same day and said he presented a variety of scenarios to account for the fire.
“He related a short circuit occurred in a lamp, his wife lit a roll of toilet paper on fire with a match, he placed a thermonuclear device on the porch,” troopers said in a criminal complaint.
Shaulis’ wife said she had moved out of the house a week earlier because of her husband’s odd behavior.
He had previously threatened to set fire to the house, she told troopers.
Shaulis was charged with arson and related offenses and criminal mischief.
He has yet to be arraigned.

State police investigating school bus crash
State police in Ebensburg are investigating a school bus crash that happened Monday on Route 36 in Clearfield Township. The Cambria Heights school bus was carrying 27 students when the driver apparently blacked out and sheared off a pine tree between the Chest Spring and Patton areas, schools superintendent Michael Strasser said. None of the high school or elementary students was hurt, he said. The students were triaged at the scene and released to their parents, Strasser said.
The driver was taken to Altoona Regional Hospital, he said. -
