JOHNSTOWN —
Richland School District is providing laptop computers at no charge to the district’s sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Tom Fleming, school district superintendent, said sophomores and juniors are being given new laptops and this year’s seniors will receive those already being used.
The new equipment costs about $400 per computer, he said.
The money is budgeted, Fleming said, and the computers are being given to students without imposing a tax increase.
The students will take the computers home after the school day and bring them back to classes the next morning.
At the end of the current school year, the computers will be collected and any necessary repairs will be made.
The laptops will be cleaned and reissued when the next year begins, Fleming said.
Next year’s sophomores will receive new computers,
Fleming said the project is an effort to boost the learning capabilities of the students.
Pupils can work on lessons together without the need to be in the same room.
The students will be learning new technology they can use not only in their classes, but also in the job market, Fleming said.
