Portage man charged with child sex assault

PORTAGE — A Portage Borough man was jailed Thursday after police alleged he sexually assaulted a 9-year-old girl over a period of nearly three years.

Portage police charged Mark Wayne Greenawalt, 49, of the 900 block of Sonman Avenue, with rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, statutory sexual assault, indecent assault and corruption of minors.

Greenawalt was picked up at his residence on Thursday without incident, Portage police Chief Edward Miller said.

In a criminal complaint, police allege that Greenawalt assaulted the girl at various locations in the borough, including his home, at times from January 2009 until the present.

Greenawalt is familiar with the girl’s family, police said.

The girl said Greenawalt forced her to undress and had sex with her, police said.

Greenawalt was arraigned by on-call District Judge Michael Zungali of Hastings.

Greenawalt was sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of  $50,000 bond.
