The United Way of the Laurel Highlands is hoping for a late rally in its 2012 fund drive.
At the end of last week, the local chapter had raised $819,000, which was 68 percent of its overall $1.2 million goal. However, the total was a little off last year’s pace.
“This is the first year out of the last five that I’ve seen a very slight trend downward in the giving levels,” said chapter President Bill McKinney. “But we are not discouraged. The programming we are investing in and the positive results that will occur are too important for this community to stop now.”
The fund drive will last until Jan. 19. The total amount of money raised will be announced during a chili cookoff at the Somerset American Legion.
Approximately two-thirds of annual donations usually come from corporate campaigns, largely through voluntary payroll deductions.
Toward the end of the drives, though, the chapter focuses on getting individual contributions through its website, uwlaurel.org. The donated money will help assist the United Way’s nonprofit partner agencies throughout Cambria and Somerset counties.
The local United Way chapter will publicly announce the awarding of specific grants in May 2013.
