JOHNSTOWN —
A Cambria County jury of seven women and five men is expected to begin deliberations by this afternoon in the trial of two Philadelphia cousins charged in the Oct. 1, 2011, shooting death of 21-year-old J-Quan Lewis at the Oakhurst Homes.
The defendants are 31-year-old Marquis “G” Neal, the alleged shooter, and 29-year-old Anthony “Mack” Harvey, who allegedly drove Neal to and from the murder scene.
Lewis was killed a day after he and Harvey had gotten into a fight outside Edder's Den bar in the Oakhurst neighborhood.
The trial resumes at 9 this morning in the courtroom at the Central Park Complex in downtown Johnstown.
Three lawyers are to make closing statements to the jury – Robert Davis Gleason, one of Neal’s lawyers; Jerome Kaharick, who represents Harvey; and Assistant District Attorney Tamara Bernstein.
Judge Norman Krumenacker then will give the jurors instructions in the law before sending them to the jury room to begin deliberations.
Both men are charged with criminal homicide. Prosecutors are seeking first-degree murder convictions, which carry a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
In addition, both are charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and flight to avoid apprehension or prosecution. Harvey also is charged with hindering the apprehension of another person.
Both men fled Johnstown after the murder. Harvey was taken into custody Nov. 24, 2011, in Chester, Delaware County, while Neal was not arrested until March 2012 in New Jersey near Philadelphia.
Neal took the stand in his own defense and testified that he pulled a gun and started shooting because he thought Lewis was reaching for a gun. Harvey chose not to testify.Murder trial nears conclusionMurder trial nears conclusion
