A Dale Borough man injured while vacationing in Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Wednesday as a result of his injuries.
Dale K. Thomas, 50, was standing in the surf with family members on July 16 when he was hit by a wave.
“They were standing right before where the waves would break,” his wife, Kelly (Mattern) Thomas, told a reporter last month.
“They were out there just basically jumping the waves.”
Family members said a big wave washed over their heads and after the wave, they didn’t see him.
He was discovered floating face-down in the water and brought to shore. But Thomas was not breathing and had no pulse.
Two nurses who were on the beach performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until an ambulance arrived.
It was determined that Thomas had suffered a high neck fracture and was paralyzed from the neck down.
Fundraisers were held in the Johnstown area to help the family pay for expenses related to Thomas’ trip home.
He was admitted into Memorial Medical Center’s Level II trauma center.
In addition to his wife, Thomas is survived by his children, Lindsey and Joshua Thomas.
Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
