In brief: Tanker accident causes evacuations

BEDFORD — A tractor-trailer tanker hauling 9,000 gallons of highly flammable propane gas rolled over on a major Bedford County highway Friday, forcing evacuations and road closures.

No injuries were reported, and while a small amount of fuel oil spilled onto Route 30, there were no propane leaks, said the county’s emergency management director, David Cubbison.

The 4 a.m. crash forced the evacuation of about 50 residents living in the area of the Jean Bonnet Tavern.

Routes 30 and 31 were closed for about eight hours while the tanker was removed and the scene cleaned up.

The highways reopened about 1 p.m. Residents were permitted to return to their homes, and businesses along Route 30 were allowed to reopen.

City man jailed on drug charges

A Johnstown man was jailed Thursday after police said they found him with 19 stamp bags of a substance believed to be heroin.

City police said they responded to a report of two women inside a minivan who appeared to be injecting drugs in the 400 block of Pine Street.

When officers arrived, a man got out of the van and ran off, but officers chased him down.

He was identified as Mekiya Roshawn Shaw, 35, of the 200 block of Ohio Street.

Police said Shaw was carrying bags of heroin marked “New Jack City” along with a spoon, syringe and tourniquet.

He was arraigned by on-call District Judge Michael Musulin of Johnstown on charges of intent to deliver and possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and flight to avoid apprehension.

Shaw was sent to Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $75,000 bond.

Driver accused of damaging fire hose

A Johnstown man caused more than $500 in damage to a fire hose when he drove his pickup truck over it, city police said.

Dennis Lee Goldberg, 30, ran over the five-inch hose Feb. 6 while firefighters were battling a structure fire on Linden Avenue, police said.

Firefighters were forced to take the hose out of service after it failed a pressure test, police said. The cost of replacing the damaged section was estimated at $530.

Goldberg was charged with criminal mischief and driving over a fire hose without authorization.

Police said Goldberg told them he ran over the hose because the vehicle in front of him drove over it.

Paws and Pucks to fund new K-9

The Paws and Pucks fundraiser for the Johnstown police K-9 Corps collected about $6,000, including a hefty donation from a former officer.

Greg Rager, a retired city K-9 officer now living in Florida, contributed a $5,000 check.

The donation means city police will be able to purchase another K-9 for the department.

The Paws and Pucks event was held Feb. 16 during a Johnstown Tomahawks hockey game at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

Scholarship program will launch today

The Cambria-Somerset Outstanding Young Woman Scholarship Program will hold its Kickoff fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at The Galleria in Richland Township.

The event takes the place of the former Rock-a-Thon.

This year the finalists will create tri-folds advertising the Outstanding Young Woman program, and mall patrons will vote for their favorite through a monetary donation.

The 26 finalists – 13 from each county – will be introduced at the Kickoff.

The final selection program will be held at 7 p.m. April 20 at the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center.
