JENNERSTOWN —
One person was killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle, head-on accident just before 6 p.m. Tuesday on Route 30 in Quemahoning Township.
State police said the accident happened east of the interchange with Route 219.
The Somerset County Coroner’s Office also is investigating.
No further details were available at press time.
Slick roads cause swarm of accidents
Five people were taken to a hospital after being injured in three of the nearly two dozen accidents that happened in Cambria County on Tuesday afternoon when rain suddenly changed to freezing rain.
Cambria 911 said two people were taken to the hospital in each of two accidents around 3:45 p.m. on Route 56, known as Haws Pike, in Lower Yoder Township.
Around the same time on Route 403, Cramer Pike, in West Taylor Township, one person was taken to the hospital after an accident.
Other accidents took place on roads that including Routes 22 and 219.
Loretto art museum closes temporarily
LORETTO – Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art on the campus of St. Francis University is temporarily closed.
Engineers are examining the building for structural damage. Administrative offices will remain open.
Buchanan State Forest gains land
CHANEYSVILLE – The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is conveying
100 acres it recently bought so the state can add the land to Buchanan State Forest.
The land in southern Bedford County will be added to the forest’s Sweet Root Natural Area linking two parts of the 1,400-acre wildlife area that includes old-growth hemlock, white pine and cove hardwood trees.
The additional land will connect a parking, picnic and trailhead area with a larger tract of remote land.
The conservancy bought the land using money from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and will convey it to the agency, which manages the state forest.
The land also will serve as a buffer for Sweet Root Creek, a tributary of Town Creek, which flows into the Potomac River.
Auto swap meet planned Saturday
BLAIRSVILLE – WyoTech student services will host an auto swap meet from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the WyoTech campus at 500 In-novation Drive, Blairsville, just off Route 22.
The free event will include an array of used and new car and truck parts, audio equipment, wires and cables, car collectibles and other items.
Community vendors can reserve an indoor or outdoor space to sell their auto parts.
An outdoor space costs $15 and an indoor space, $10.
All proceeds benefit the WyoTech student activity fund.
