Holy Name Elementary celebrating centennial

EBENSBURG — After 100 years, Catholic education is still thriving at Holy Name Elementary School.

As a way to celebrate the milestone, school officials are planning a week of festivities to usher in the centennial.

“It’s been 100 years of Catholic education here and to have come this far and have a strong population of students is great,” said Principal Robin McMullen.

The student body dedicated a tree on Friday to begin the official start of the celebration.

A proclamation was read by Cambria County President Commissioner P.J. Stevens recognizing the accomplishment.

Former Ebensburg Mayor Randy Datsko led the group in prayer and offered the dedication.

“The tree symbolizes the students roots that they put down as the foundation of their Catholic education,” McMullen said.

Pupils will gather from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at Revloc Park for a picnic lunch.

Then on Sept. 18, a golf tournament will be held at Immergrun Golf Course in Loretto.

“We have invited all alumni to come back and play,” McMullen said.

Following the tournament, a dinner and dance will be held in the elementary school’s cafeteria.

Sister Helen Marie Burns, the vice president of mission integration at Mount Aloysius College, will be the guest speaker at the event. School pastor Monsignor Arnold Gaus also will speak.

A special Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at Holy Name Catholic Church.

“After the Mass we will have an open house at the school and have memorabilia from the past on display,” McMullen said. “Everyone is welcome to come and walk through memory lane.”

McMullen added that it is the support of benefactors, parents and the church parish that allows the school to thrive.

“Monsignor Gaus has a strong dedication to Catholic education and he works hard at keeping kids here,” she said. “He works at keeping tuition low and has established endowments, so that’s why I think we continue to be a strong school.”

Holy Name Elementary currently has 219 pupils enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade.
