BRADDOCK — The engineer is unaccounted for after a train crashed spilling diesel fuel into a creek at or near U.S. Steel’s Edgar Thompson Works near Pittsburgh.
Allegheny County 911 dispatchers say a hazardous materials crew is dealing with 1,200 gallons of fuel leaking into Turtle Creek. A cadaver-sniffing dog is also on standby because the train’s engineer could not immediately be found.
Initial reports were that the train’s conductor was missing, but he has been located.
U.S. Steel spokeswoman Erin DiPietro says the train is owned by Union Railroad, which is part of Transtar, a U.S. Steel subsidiary whose trains serve the company’s plants. But she could not immediately comment on video that appears to show that two trains collided, causing some coal cars to tip over.
The plant is in Braddock, a few miles east of Pittsburgh.
