Jurors hear taped confession in toddler’s death

PITTSBURGH — Jurors have heard the taped confession of a Pittsburgh-area man accused of leaving his 23-month-old daughter outside to freeze to death.

Prosecutors on Monday played the tape of William Page discussing the death of his daughter, Nyia, with homicide detectives after her body was found in February 2007.

In opening statements Page’s attorney said his client was repeatedly interrogated and isolated, prompting a false confession.

But on the tape Page tells the detectives they’re “excellent” and he doesn’t feel like they’re trying to pressure him.

Page told police he kicked the girl because she kept removing her diaper and left her outside in the snow in Braddock, about 10 miles east of Pittsburgh. Police said tiny footprints in the snow suggest the girl walked around before she died.

Page is expected to testify later this week.
